What do these images say to you? How does he get from coat and trilby to supplicant?
These are two of the only paintings that Bacon didn't destroy from his pre-1950 work. What saved them? Who saved them?

They both look like weeping people to me--the top one is especially striking, to me he looks like a man crumpled over a grave, but he also looks like the entrance to a tomb.
It should be terribly obvious at this point that I know nothing about art.
