Sewing Sonnet: Reading Chekhov & Carver

Embroidering

Here is the heart, you say, this
pincushion, this strawberry. Here
is the floss of it: arteries,
veins threading from it, toward it;
thin rungs of the capillaries,
raveling and unraveling
over, under, crossings
and uncrossings. Now, tie the knot

off; snip it with the silver points
of the scissors (Delilah's legs
around the head of Samson); take
up the needle; plunge it in and
out. Back-stitch, hem-stitch, love-knot...Think
less of its length, more of its depths.
