I purchased a used copy of A Formal Feeling Comes : Poems in Form by Contemporary Women. The selections are wonderful, and I'm especially enthralled by a former owner's notes.
The poetic line here is in jam.--Mary Jo Salter, "What Do Women Want?"
Where is the poetic con seated? --Julia Alvarez, "How I Learned to Sweep"
Nice example of just a position. --Maxine Kumin, "The Nuns of Childhood: Two Views"
In every case the former owner's notes were apt, except for this mysterious quote, written on a blank page near the end of the book:
Does the language come first or fourth? This sounds like ballet, maybe a question asked by Degas' Little Ballerina. I'll be pondering that one a long, long time.
