This morning, we were awakened at 4 a.m. by a scritching, scratching sound by our bedroom window. The giant mama raccoon was trying to gain egress into our attic. Four little bandits trailed behind her like smaller beads on a rosary.
The sound of that reminded me of this poem, which I wrote, all at once, decades ago. It's not very "poetic," but I like it anyway. Dancing mouse and all--sounds like Disney...

"Stilted" is such a great word in that last line -- it describes the herons physically but also gives a sense of their two-dimensionality.
